For those who love tunes and the ability to take them along wherever you may roam, there are some great auto sound systems that allow you to basically plug in your favorite tunes to play as you go. It doesn't really matter which style of MP3 player you use, most of the newer auto sound systems at least have the ability to read and translate the material from these players into great music for you to enjoy on your ride by simply plugging your MP3 player into the car stereo. You may replace your car stereo to any kind that will suit your preferences like it can play any format not just MP3, complete with equalizer and the likes, with built-in LCD display, etc. Still its an investment to quality head unit.
If you have a nice car stereo or head unit already, usually the next thing that you might consider to invest is the amplifiers. These will give your head unit clear signal thus, better sound quality and power depending on the specs of the amplifier you use.
Speakers on the other hand is the major investment that you may consider. There are so many speaker brands you can choose from. Of course, it will be depending on your preferences whether you want it powerfully loud or just wonderful clarity. And you might want to consider also to have your speaker set-up for better show to all your friends and your peers.
There are other things that you may want to consider for investment on your car as well like DVD players, LCD monitors, nice internal lights, etc. When you have all of your additional hardware in it, it will give your car worth the price if you plan to sell it in the future. Again, with all the things that you might want for your car either for upgrades or aesthetics, its a great investment!
